Meet the Mafia – Suzanne Smith Design
This week it’s the turn of mafiosi Suzanne of Suzanne Smith Design.
Why did you start in business/crafting?
I love making things and have always liked to create things in my spare time. Over the years things gradually developed into a business.
How did you come up with your crafty name?
My business name is just my own as it was easier when I finished Art School to use my own name. I have ‘Design’ after it though as I design so many things that it covered it all.
Is your glass half full or half empty?
Probably half full!
What is your favourite thing that costs nothing?
Walking – I love to walk anywhere and everywhere.
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Inspiration comes from all sorts of things for me – Cakes, confectionary, shops and boutiques, flea markets, fashion, film, theatre sets, magazines and books to name but a few.

Top 5 desert-island essentials?
1. Suncream – I burn easily
2. Unlimited supply of chocolate
3. A good read
4. Paper and pens for doodling
5. Internet Access (if that technically possible on an island?)
What is the ugliest most pitiful thing you’ve ever made?
I am pleased to say that I don’t think I have ever made anything that I could call ugly (or perhaps I am deluded!)
What have you made that you’re most proud of?
I am most proud of my Degree show from GSA in 2006 which was very hard work to put together but worth it! A mix of jewellery and felt objects, it provided me with direction that I am still following now.
What’s so great about Glasgow?
Glasgow is one of the most beautiful cities in the UK with amazing Victorian buildings and has so much happening it is hard to keep up. I love the fact that it is constantly evolving, changing and developing and is a great place to live.
Favourite biscuit?
Shortbread
What crafts do you still want to learn?
I would love to learn to Crochet.
What is your idea of a perfect day?
My perfect day would be to wake up to bright sunshine and have a nice breakfast. Go for a country walk and then lunch. In the afternoon, I would like to wander around antique shops and take afternoon tea. The evening would be nicely finished off by a cinema or theatre visit.
What do you do in your day-to-day life, other than being a mafioso?
I work in a contemporary jewellery store, run my business, look after my cats and husband.I love to wader about markets and boutiques, listen to music and generally just enjoy myself as much as I can.
What is your favourite crafting tool?
I use many tools but my favourite item would probably be my bamboo mat for
felt making which gets much use.
What are your plans for the future?
I would love to teach people creative skills and find this area very rewarding. One day I will be able to put together workshops to inspire people to be creative and find nice premises to work from.
