GmbH Magazine Shop

Great news for independent magazine lovers! GmbH will open this week at The Modern Institute in Glasgow, as an outlet for a wide range of magazines, journals and periodicals sourced from across the world. Focusing on bespoke publishing, art, fashion, design, film and music as well as covering lifestyle, culture and affairs.

They’ll be stocking hundreds of hard to find publications including Adbusters, Anorak, Aperture, Architecture Review, Art Forum, Art Monthly, Blueprint, Creative Review, Dazed & Confused, Dot Dot Dot, Fire & Knives, Frieze, I-D, Illustrated Ape, It’s Nice That, Karen, Little White Lies, LManzine, Nobrow, Nylon, Pop, The Wire, Wallpaper, Wired and Wonderland with more titles added every month.

There’s a preview evening on Friday 8th October from 4pm-9pm and then the shop opens officially on Saturday 9th October at 12pm.

Autumn Classes at Ricefield

Ricefield, Glasgow’s Chinese Arts & Cultural Centre have recently moved into the Trongate 103 building and have a fantastic programme of night classes and weekend courses planned for the Autumn.

Courses include:

  • Writing Smoke- Long Fiction
  • Chinese Book Arts
  • China on Film: An Introduction to Chinese Language Cinema
  • Chinese Seal Carving
  • Techniques in Chinese Printmaking

Crafty Classes in Glasgow

Autumn is approaching and with it, a whole host of new craft classes!

Over at the LUV Project Workshop, it’s time for more evening sewing classes. Beginners can learn the basics at  Starting from Scratch (13th October to 1st December), while more experienced sewists can tackle Zips, Bits & Buttonholes (14th October to 2nd December).Both classes are from: 6.30pm – 8.30pm at The LUV Project Workshop in Linthouse.

If crochet is more your thing then Ladies, Get Yer Balls Out! have a new schedule of classes in the Southside. Choose from Mummy’s Monday Morning (£30 for 3 weeks) where you can learn the basics of crochet and how to make a winter hat for your baby, or Sexy Scarflette (£25) where you can make a scarflette. All materials are provided.

Magpie Market

Magpie Craft & Design Fair returns to Edinburgh’s Grassmarket this Sunday 12th September where you can find GCM member Glitterysah amongst the fabulous selection of handmade wares and vintage goodies.

It takes place from 12pm – 5pm at The LOT, 4-6 Grassmarket, and you can find out more over at the Magpie Market blog.

Edinburgh Festival

Maybe you’re keeping it Eastside this weekend? There’s lots going on in Edinburgh, with the Fringe and Festival in full swing. You can find Glasgow’s own Dazed Dorothy, Breagha, Suzy Loves and Gillian Kyle at the West End Fair at St John’s Churchyard, just next to Princes Street Gardens, every day until 29 August from 11-6.

Ravelry Meetups

Ravelry members in both Edinburgh and Glasgow can get social with meetups in both cities – weather permitting – on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend. On Saturday the venue is the Meadows, right next to Middle Meadow Walk, with the meet starting at 2pm. On Sunday, the meet takes place in or near Kibble Palace, in Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens. If you belong to Ravelry, bring your yarn, needles and perhaps some treats to share with your fellow members.
